Ethernet Services Manager (ESM)
World Wide Packets LightningEdge Ethernet Services Manager (ESM), Release 5.1 is a ground-breaking carrier-grade, automated service activation, creation and management platform for managing a service provider’s LightningEdge access and aggregation network. ESM lets users quickly and easily build and deploy large-scale Carrier Ethernet networks; cut time to market for new services; accelerate service revenue; maximize service availability; assure service quality; leverage existing systems; and enables subscriber-managed services. All of these cut total cost of ownership (TCO) and reduce time to market and revenue. ESM Release 5.1 also paves the way to quickly, cost-effectively and easily implement new, as-yet-unthought-of services for increased revenue and competitiveness.
ESM is built on a low-touch, service-oriented architecture that transparently handles all the complexities and details of deploying, delivering, and sustaining True Carrier Ethernet™ services. This comprehensive suite of integrated software tools lets service providers respond rapidly to demand for new Ethernet-based services that drive top-line revenue growth while significantly reducing operating expenses.
The ESM service and network management platform scales from small utilities, municipalities and independent operating carriers (IOCs) networks to the large, geographically dispersed networks of Tier 1 service providers and multiple service operators (MSOs).
Delivering True Carrier Ethernet Services
ESM leverages the Carrier Ethernet management plane features of World Wide Packets’ LightningEdge Operating System (LE-OS). This common operating system spans the entire LightningEdge product line and unlocks the value of Carrier Ethernet in the access network by letting network operators quickly and efficiently upgrade World Wide Packets’ purpose-built network devices with the latest Carrier Ethernet features, standards and attributes as they become available.
ESM Release 5.1 automates network and service management processes to reduce and simplify the overall management of a service provider’s access and aggregation network. It has been designed to minimize the complexity and challenges of new services by providing support for service automation, monitoring, testing and restoration. These features enable faster rollouts, fewer mistakes, faster recovery and less service downtime, lowering the cost of rollouts.
ESM Release 5.1 integrates smoothly with northbound carrier NMS and OSS systems to provide a seamless, automated service environment that delivers the operational power of these carrier systems. It provides rich support for Layer 2 management protocols such as LLDP, EOAM and CFM, enabling service providers to reliably deploy and manage their Carrier Ethernet networks with the predictability, automation and integration they demand. Built specifically for the carrier and service provider environment, ESM scales to support millions of services across tens of thousands of network elements, all while smoothly integrating with northbound NMS and OSS applications.
The flexibility of the ESM platform lets service providers support both connectionless services such as Ethernet and more connection-oriented services such as Provider Backbone Bridging–Traffic Engineering (PBB-TE) and MPLS. This makes it easy for a service provider to create new composite or hybrid service offerings. Further, the standards-based architecture of ESM enables service providers to incrementally deploy Carrier Ethernet service networks that leverage existing and future service delivery technologies including MPLS, PBB-TE and third party technologies such as DSL, ATM, 3G+ and WiMax.
