LightningEdge® Operating System (LE-OS)
Long-Term Investment Protection
Ethernet is the global standard for most enterprise networks and, increasingly, for carrier networks. By standardizing on Ethernet access, LE-OS enables the operator to take advantage of the low cost structure of Ethernet while at the same time preserving their investment in the large installed base of Ethernet equipment.
Every World Wide Packets Concentration and Distribution platform uses the LightningEdge Operating system to deliver a level of deployment consistency and scalability unmatched in the industry. Network operators can easily scale from the smallest to the largest Ethernet access configurations using the same features from the same operating system code base, with the same “look and feel” and the same management tools for every LE-OS platform.
LE-OS protects and preserves the operator’s network equipment investment in three important ways:
- Low capital expenditures (CapEx)
- Reduced operational expenditures (OpEx)
- Deployment of new business services quickly and easily for fast return on investment
LE-OS Capital Expenditure Savings
World Wide Packets delivers standards-based Ethernet switches that are interoperable with the operator’s existing legacy infrastructure. Not only does LE-OS interoperability reduce the barrier to entry at the access point of the network, but operators can take full advantage of Ethernet’s low-cost structure. Access Ethernet optimization enables very low-cost per subscriber for World Wide Packets switches while at the same time delivering excellent scalability for future network growth, both of which reduce capital expenditures dramatically.
LE-OS also enables a true “triple play” solution of multiple types of services and data types over a single converged infrastructure. Rather than purchasing different platforms for each type of traffic, LE-OS enables high speed internet, data services, VoIP, video services and other differentiated services to be integrated into a single, very cost-effective switch. And because LE-OS is architected to grow with the network, operators can reduce the number of “forklift upgrades” by taking advantage of the LE-OS-based systems already in the field.
LE-OS Operational Expenditure Savings
The common LE-OS code base used in all World Wide Packets Concentration and Distribution switches enables a single deployment model in the distribution of configuration files, reduced training, and integrated network management with service provisioning—all of which greatly reduce ongoing operational expenditures. All LE-OS platforms, for example, use a common command line interface (CLI) and Management Information Base (MIB) so operators can leverage management training between World Wide Packets’ platforms. Similarly, the LE-OS auto activation capability enables World Wide Packets platforms to be automatically activated and updated with the latest features thereby reducing Moves/Adds/Changes operational expenses and simplifying overall management of the network.
Business Services Scalability
Features like “hard” Quality of Service, high availability, and service provisioning are required in today’s business environment to maximize service revenues and customer satisfaction. LE-OS goes beyond traditional investment protection by optimizing these features to generate maximum service revenues while reducing costs. And business service applications can be rolled out quickly, reliably and with scalable performance to ensure long-term productivity and availability. The ability to roll out these new business services is fundamental to LE-OS. True Carrier Class features designed to support both metro and business subscribers enable LE-OS to deliver maximum penetration in Ethernet access configurations and with these advanced features LE-OS is the first true Carrier Class access operating system focused on Ethernet Access.
