LightningEdge® Service Concentration Switch Family
Robust Multicast Support
The World Wide Packets Service Concentration Switches support a comprehensive set of multicast software services including support for up to 1,024 multicast groups, IGMP Snooping, Broadcast Storm Control, a wide variety of Multicast filtering options, and Quality of Service capabilities. Multicast service reliability is enhanced with Resilient Multicast Distribution (RMD) for immediate restoration on link failure, improved security by preventing multicast and broadcast Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, and enabling full provision of multicast services with advanced Committed Information Rate (CIR) and Excess Information Rate (EIR) allocations.
Service Concentration Switch Multicast implementation—including Multicast VLAN translation—delivers important benefits to network operators:
- Reduces the number of multicast control messages traveling through the network for increased service scalability
- Improves reliability with Resilient Multicast Distribution for immediate video restoration on link failure
- Improves security by preventing multicast and broadcast Denial of Service (DoS) attacks.
- Enables full provisioning of multicast services with CIR and EIR
- Positions multicast video closer to the termination point to improve overall efficiency and performance
- Enhances service interoperability with standard IGMP protocol messages exchanged and standard Ethernet Layer 2 transport
Service Concentration Switches also support an innovative, industry-leading implementation of Multicast optimized for video applications. ChannelStream™ and StreamCast™ solutions are advanced video multicast implementations that support highly efficient—and affordable—IP video delivery for off loading routers and enabling routerless delivery of multicast services. ChannelStream is the most efficient method of broadcasting IP video. It pushes multicast content to any level of the network, rather than using inefficient, centralized routers that can be a bottleneck in the flow of content. StreamCast delivers a similar efficiency for IP video conferencing applications. By maintaining a complete multicast mesh with one or more sources at each mesh node, StreamCast also eliminates the need for a centralized multicast router.
