Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing Solution

LightningEdge CWDM Solution

World Wide Packets LightningEdge CWDM solution includes Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) CWDM optical transceivers, passive Mux/Demux and Optical Add/Drop Muxes (OADM) components.

CWDM SFP Optical Transceivers

World Wide Packets LightningEdge Ethernet service delivery access network platforms employ industry standard Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) optical transceivers. LightningEdge platforms support any available SFP optical transceiver including 100 Mb/s, 1 Gb/s, multimode, single mode, and CWDM varieties. The ability to use SFP CWDM optics integrated directly into the LightningEdge platform provides several advantages over external CWDM solutions:

  • Integrated service and link management
  • Reduced rack space requirements
  • Reduced cabling
  • Reduced power requirements
  • Increased reliability
  • Costs matched to subscriber take rates

Passive CWDM Components

The passive components of existing CWDM implementations focus only on the simplex nature of the fiber plant, which adds significant cabling and configuration complexity wherever passive components are deployed with active switching platforms.

World Wide Packets CWDM solution includes passive components specifically designed to support the duplex nature of Ethernet for deployments with active switching platforms, and simplex components for locations where Outside Plant (OSP) technicians will be responsible for the passives.

LightningEdge CWDM passive components are transparent to the line rate and support any mix of 100 Mb/s or 1 Gb/s line rates as determined by the specific SFP optical transceivers used.

Passive Mux/Demux

The passive Mux/Demux is a key component of the LightningEdge CWDM solution and is available in a 10λ OSP splice case-ready version, and industry standard 4λ and 10λ LGX form factor modules for deployments in existing LGX bays. The LGX module versions include the mux and demux functionality on the same module providing a duplex interface that simplifies cabling to the LightningEdge platforms. The LGX module versions also include an integrated expansion channel to address adding CWDM capabilities to fiber that is already in service with 1310 nm links.

Passive Optical Add/Drop Mux (OADM)

World Wide Packets simplifies the insertion and removal of lambdas of interest with three passive OADMs:

  • 3-port OSP OADM: 1430 nm – 1610 nm Add/Drop
  • 3-port OSP Wideband OADM: 1310 nm Add/Drop
  • 4-port LGX OADM: 1430 nm – 1610 nm Add/Drop

The 3-port OSP OADMs are packaged for OSP splice trays and facilitate a single lambda add/drop for star architectures. The 3-port OSP Wideband OADM is for 1310 nm add/drop in star architectures. This filter may be used to complement the expansion port in the CWDM Mux/Demux at the other end of the link.

The 4-port LGX OADM is packaged in the LGX form-factor and facilitates single lambda add/drop for ring architectures with Ultra-Blocking filters to insure no aliasing of the CWDM frequencies into the 1300 nm spectrum.
